Common questions
What is the median income in Australia?
About $49,000 a year across everyone aged 15 and over, counting people with little or no income. That’s the 2021 Census median of $805 a week, raised by wage growth since.
Why is it lower than average earnings?
Average full-time earnings only count people working full time, and a few very high incomes pull an average up. This compares you with everyone, including part-time workers, students and retirees, and uses the middle (median), not the average.
Is there a gender pay gap?
Yes. The median income for women is well below men’s, partly because more women work part time. Pick men or women above to compare.
