Common questions

How much do I repay on my HELP debt?

Repayments come out of your pay once your income is over $69,528 (2026–27): 15c in each dollar over that, rising to 17c over $129,717, and never more than 10% of your income.

What is HELP indexation?

Each 1 June, what you still owe goes up by the lower of inflation and wage growth. It was 2.8% on 1 June 2026. It’s not interest, but it works like it.

Should I make voluntary repayments?

They cut the balance that gets indexed, so you pay a little less overall. Whether it’s worth it depends on what else that money could do: paying off a credit card or adding to savings may be better.
