Common questions

How is take-home pay worked out?

Your gross pay, less federal income tax (2026 brackets after the standard deduction), Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and West Virginia income tax, and anything you put in a 401(k) or pay for health cover before tax.

Is there really no tax on tips and overtime?

From 2025 to 2028, you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint) of the extra half in time-and-a-half overtime, from federal taxable income. Social Security, Medicare and most state taxes still apply, and the deductions shrink above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).

Why is my paycheck different?

Your employer withholds from each paycheck using your W-4 and the IRS withholding tables, which don’t know everything about your year. Local taxes, state disability or leave programs, and benefit deductions can also differ. The difference is settled when you file your return.

What is the 2026 standard deduction?

$16,100 if you’re single, $32,200 married filing jointly, and $24,150 for a head of household.
